Community Partner – Open Door Bird Sanctuary

Did you know that each production at TAP has a community partner? The first preview performance of each show is “Pay-What-You-Will”, with all proceeds benefiting our community partner! For the upcoming BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA, TAP is thrilled to partner with the amazing Open Door Bird Sanctuary.

Learn a bit more about this great organization below:

The Open Door Bird Sanctuary raises avian awareness and inspires coexistence with the rich natural world of Door County, of Wisconsin and wherever you call home. We are a private non-profit 501(c) 3 organization and the only facility of its kind in the area. With 34 acres of pristine land with hiking trails, wildlife viewing and our birds of prey, we offer a unique combination of environmental and wildlife education as well as being a destination for both Door County residents and tourists alike. Our visitors are all ages offering just as much awe and inspiration to adults as to children. Highlights are:

  • Feature live raptors for educational observation for Door County school groups, service clubs, senior groups all year round both on site and off.
  • Engaging environmental education through interactive, live behavioral demonstrations
  • Shelter to injured raptors (birds of prey)

This Pay-What-You-Will preview performance will be extra special – because Open Door Bird Sanctuary will be bringing two of their birds for folks to meet before the show! Don’t miss this amazing chance to learn more about their programs and see one of their raptors live.

New Play Reading Club at Door County Library

Third Avenue PlayWorks will expand its partnership with Door County Library with the launch of a Play Reading Club in October.

TAP launched a partnership with Door County Library in early 2022 to create the Checkout TAP program. Partnering with all eight Door County Library branches, Checkout TAP is making available more than 1,600 free theater tickets using a library code for people across the county.

This partnership will expand in October with the launch of the Play Reading Club, based out of the Sturgeon Bay Branch. This monthly reading club will add to the library’s existing program of book reading clubs with a focus on dramatic literature. Each month, participants will read and discuss a play.

The Play Reading Club will be led by TAP Artistic Director Jacob Janssen, who says of the program, “We love working with community partners like Door County Library, and I’m excited to expand that with this new reading club. So many people haven’t read a play beyond high school Shakespeare class. I love reading plays, so I’m excited to share that with everyone – and open the door to the wide world of plays that are out there.”

The first Play Reading Club will take place on Wednesday, October 19 at 3PM. Participants will read and discuss BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA, TAP’s next production opening early October. A limited number of scripts can be checked out of the library, and a reference copy will be available for reading in the library. No advance sign-up is required, so everyone is welcome to join.

The Play Reading Club will continue monthly, and the group who attends in October will help to choose November’s play.

Janssen says that this program will offer a unique reading experience to participants. He adds, “You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how theater artists translate a play from page to stage.”

Facilitated by Artistic Director Jacob Janssen, this one-of-a-kind event will bring together representatives from environmental organizations in our region to discuss the state of environmental advocacy and activism in Door County.

The discussion is inspired by the upcoming BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA, running October 2-30. BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA draws its artistic inspiration from the individual experience of climate change in everyday lives.
