A Summer Theater Preview

As Door County professional theater companies are preparing to leave a memorable mark on the audience, here’s a look in brief at what’s coming and what theater-goers are most excited about this summer.

Third Avenue PlayWorks

Third Avenue PlayWorks (TAP) Steve & Jackie Kane Theatre in Sturgeon Bay has exciting summer shows lined up. Moonlight and Magnolias opened on June 3 and will close on June 21; Red Herring will show from July 15 to Aug. 9; The Call List will show from Sept. 23 to Oct. 11.

People who know and love the movie Gone with the Wind will be impressed by the Moonlight and Magnolias’ theatrical retelling of the chaotic screenwriting process that took place over a span of five days. “It’s pretty shocking and ends up being quite hilarious,” said Jacob Janssen, the Jackie & Steve Kane Artistic Director.

The show comes from an impressive cast.

“This cast is unbelievably talented,” Janssen said. “Certain people understand stylistically what a play is doing, and you can just see it. That’s who we have in these shows this year.”

The first Wednesday of every show at TAP is a “pay-what-you-will” performance benefiting a community organization. TAP also has a partnership with local libraries, so anyone with a Door County library card can request two free tickets for one show a year.

Along with making theater accessible to the community, TAP strives to represent local talent.

“It’s our responsibility to support and highlight the talent of Northeast Wisconsin,” Janssen said. That’s why 54 percent of TAP’s performers are local residents.
