The 39 Steps Opens with Pay-What-You-Will Preview

Third Avenue PlayWorks (TAP) has announced its upcoming production of The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow from the movie by Alfred Hitchcock.

By Door County PulseJuly 14th, 2025

The third show of the 2025 season at TAP, this play runs July 16 to Aug. 10, featuring performances by Rudy Galvan, Charlotte Foster, Karen Estrada and Dan Klarer.

The 39 Steps is two hours and fifteen minutes of fast-paced fun and action, with one fifteen-minute intermission and concessions available. In an inventive parody of the 1935 adventure film, the entire plot is reenacted by a cast of only four actors, following the adventures of a handsome hero, Richard Hannay, as he encounters dastardly murders and double-crossing secret agents.

“I’m so excited to have Karen Estrada, Dan Klarer and Charlotte Foster back on our stage,” TAP Artistic Director Jacob Janssen said. “Audiences may remember them from previous productions such as Boeing, BoeingThe Mystery of Irma Vep and Jeeves Saves the Day. I’m especially thrilled to introduce Rudy Galvan as Richard Hannay, making his Door County debut.”

In conjunction with the production, TAP is partnering with local nonprofit the Sturgeon Bay Band Parent Organization for a pay-what-you-will preview on July 16, 7:30 pm. The organization assists directors to keep the band program up and running, with funds supporting scholarships for private lessons, band camps and other activities.

Those interested in attending the preview to support this organization may arrive as early as 6:30 pm on the evening of the performance for general admission seating. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations may be made in cash or checks made out to Third Avenue PlayWorks. Half of the proceeds will benefit this show’s community partner.

The initial preview is followed by a final preview on July 17, 2 pm, and opening night on July 18, 7:30 pm. The show will be performed Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm and Friday matinees on July 25 and Aug. 8 at 2 pm. A post-show conversation will follow the July 25 matinee.
